The substances in the Catappa leaves (tannins) stimulate a compression of the mucous membrane. Due to the compression of the mucous membrane, the skin is better protected and the colors of the bill come out better.
When the leaves are placed in the aquarium, they will slowly break down and release tannins that turn the water yellow or brown. These tannins can lower the pH of the water and are said to kill bacteria and fungi, which is useful for sensitive shrimp.
