Vallisneria sp. Gigantea from Asia is a simple plant that grows quickly and is suitable for large aquariums. In most aquariums the leaves grow so long that they float on the surface (50-150 cm, 2 cm wide). Therefore, the plant needs to be pruned to prevent it from taking too much light from plants growing below it.

The leaves are tough and strong, so they are not normally eaten by herbivorous fish. Vallisneria americana reproduces easily by shoots, which are plentiful if the soil is rich in nutrients.
