About the species
Within the Neocaridina genus, there are two species of interest to aquarists: Neocaridina davidi and Neocaridina palmata (White Pearl). Neocaridina is perfect as a beginner shrimp. It comes in many different patterns and colors and is a robust and highly productive genus of dwarf shrimp.
Color & behavior
We often get asked if you can mix colors, and yes – you can if you want a very colorful aquarium. However, it’s important to keep in mind that the shrimp may lose their intense coloration over time and revert to a more natural, camouflaged color.
Neocaridina are very peaceful and thrive best in groups of at least 10 individuals. They do well together with snails and small, peaceful fish.
Breeding
This species is easy to breed, and you will likely experience baby shrimp from time to time. A female carries around 30–50 eggs for approximately 20–30 days. The shrimplets are born fully developed and are about 3 mm in size.
Environment & aquarium
Neocaridina can tolerate a wide range of water parameters. In many cases, regular tap water, a substrate, a sponge filter, and some plants and decorations are enough.
The shrimp thrive better when provided with plenty of hiding spots. A tank of 20–30 liters is sufficient to start with, but keep in mind that the population can grow quickly, which may require more space.
Feeding
Neocaridina are omnivorous shrimp that naturally feed on biofilm in the aquarium. However, there is usually not enough biofilm and algae available to sustain a colony.
It is therefore recommended to supplement their diet with shrimp food as well as vegetables such as zucchini, carrot, broccoli, and green peas – preferably organic.
